Sullivan's barn at River Road burned down

Message from Randy Clark on the TTO Email list

Rather than us getting all upset about political issues, lets concentrate on helping our neighbors.? David and Ruthie Sullivan who have lived in Underhill for nearly 70 years (Ruthie) lost their hay barn this morning at 2:50am to fire.? The building built in 1986 to replace a previous barn that was lost to fire was fully engulfed in fire and the roof had collapsed when the UJFD arrived on the scene shortly before 3am.? 3000 bales of hay, 2 wagons, a baler and a tractor were totally destroyed as was the barn.? David and Ruthie showed little emotion on the outside however you could tell that it is a major blow to them on the inside!? No exposures were involved and no animals were lost.? Over the years they have hosted school classes to visit the cows, pigs, horses, donkeys, chickens, cats and other farm animals.? The Sullivans are very hard workers and have always supported the community.? Now it is time to support the Sullivans, David has been a member of the Underhill-Jericho Fire Department for 42 years and the Town Fire Warden for at least 30 years.? They do have fire insurance but there are always things that insurance does not cover, so if you would like to send a donation to the Sullivans their address is 91 River Road, Underhill, VT 05489 or if you can not afford to send a donation, just a note expressing your sorrow in their loss and words of encouragement.

? Sorry you can not email them as they do not own a computer, they are just plain "salt of the earth" VERMONTERS.

Approximately 60 firefighters from the UJFD,?Essex Town Fire Department and Essex Rescue fought the blaze for two hours before bringing it under control and then remained on the scene for another 4 hours, keeping the fire from spreading to the barn in the front of the barn that burned.? 70,000 gallons of water was pumped over 2500 ft through the UJFD 5 in. supply line from a hydrant at the corner of Park Street and River Road, one way traffic was maintained throughout the operation.??Water was also trucked to the scene in 3 tanker trucks.? The wind was light on this crisp 42 degree morning while the moon and stars shown bright.? The UJFD auxiliary served hot coffee and drinks as well as donuts and cool water to keep firefighters hydrated.? An excavator was used to spread the burning hay so that it could be put out.? The operation under the direction of Chief Clark went smooth for the duration of the event.? As hay is very difficult to extinguish, the UJFD was called back at 4:15 this afternoon to douse hot spots that flare up from time to time, a minimum crew with a 1700 gallon tanker responded.
